Nominated by Dedicated Officers Constable Mandy Hamilton and PCSTO Linda Sillitoe for his involvement in the Community to engage young people in diversionary activities, Sixteen-year-old Daryl Parker from Overchurch, a former Woodchurch High pupil, is also actively involved as a member of Overchurch Residents Association. Daryl uses this forum to promote the youth diversionary activities he is involved in on the estate.

After consultation with his peers he initiated "Rave Caves" at the local Community centre. These have proved so successful that they are held on a monthly basis and attract 100 young people from all across Merseyside who may otherwise be involved in Anti-Social Behaviour.

Daryl provides the music and teaches younger members how to mix the music themselves. The raves have not only provided a safe place to go, they have also involved Wirral Anti-social Behaviour Team, the Overchurch Residents Association and the Police.

Daryl also attended Army days held on the estate and was part of a local team that took part in the Dragon Boat races in Merseyside Police Chief's Challenge 2008.

Youth Co-ordinator Constable Colin Newby said, "It's always a pleasure to be able to reward young people for positive actions which make Wirral a safer place to live, work and visit.

The Merseyside Police Community Relations Department in Wallasey in conjunction with Pensby Sports College and Mid Wirral Crime Prevention Panel recently hosted a EURO SCHOOLS 2008 Football Festival for young people across the Wirral.
In total, 240 young people aged 9-10 years participated in the 2-day tournament. 24 Primary and Junior Schools were represented which included both girls and boys teams.

The event was run by the School Sports Partnership at Pensby High School for Boys.

Each participating school represented a different European Country on which they were asked to carry out research and carry out a presentation on their findings to the other schools attending.

At the end of the event each young person received a certificate and medal. The winning Schools both received trophies, Sacred Heart in Moreton for the boys and Lingham Primary School for the girl’s competition. A ‘Fair Play Award’ was also awarded to Mount Primary, Wallasey for the boys and Grove Street, New Ferry for the girls.

Youth Coordinator, Constable Colin Newby said, “The young people who attended thoroughly enjoyed the day, playing football and presenting the country research work they had prepared. Our special thanks go to School Sports Partnership for hosting and running the event, and to Mid Wirral Crime Prevention Panel for funding the awards.

Dragon Boat racing came to Wirral for the first time when a charity event was held on West Kirby’s marine lake. The event was jointly staged by Calday Grange Grammar School and the Rotary Club of Mid Wirral, who teamed up with professional Dragon Boat racing organiser 4 Dragons Ltd.

More than 20 teams took part in the race on Saturday, in aid of Bob Champion’s cancer charity and other local good causes. Teams from the boys’ grammar school, made up of staff and students, raced against teams from the community including Merseyside Police and other local public sector teams, as well as teams from private companies.
Champion himself was on hand to present the trophies. The former jockey and cancer survivor became famous for riding Aldaniti to victory in the 1981 Grand National. He is now a fundraiser for the charity which bears his name, one of the few supporting research into male cancer.

Some teams had laid down the gauntlet early on with excellent times being posted by Chief’s Challengers (Merseyside Police), Well Oiled Cogs (Church of the Good Shepherd) and a particularly fast Upper 6th form from Calday Grange.
Though the 6th formers had been performing well all day the benchmark was set by Chief’s Challengers who managed to pull the fastest recorded time of the day. This team of high-ranking Merseyside Police Officers balanced good fun with a ruthless sporting efficiency, it was no wonder they were favourites to win.

In the Final it was a close win for Calday Upper 6th form and a second place for Calday Lower 6th form ensuring bragging rights by the more senior of the scholars on Monday morning. Chief’s Challengers came in a very close third in what was one of the closest races of the day. Both Calday Lower 6th form and Chief’s Challengers teams were magnanimous and applauded the winning team through the boat marshalling area.

Though being a slick operation all day the event was not without its drama at the end. The information provided to the presenter of the awards showed 3rd place as winners and the winners as 3rd place. Fortunately this glitch was identified very quickly and the rightful winners celebrated in some style.

The Chief’s Challengers were lead by Wirral’s Area Commander, Chief Superintendent Jon Ward, and the crew was made up of officers from across the Borough. After the event Mr Ward reflected, “As I look back on yesterday I think we were unfortunate not to win and clearly the winners should have been the team who did the quickest run of the day - but that could be me just being a bad looser!! I had a great day yesterday and thanks to all for taking part.

The partnership project involving partner agencies Wirral Council, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Wirral Partnership Homes received the award for an innovative project which has helped more than 500 people in Wirral to stay safe.

The scheme that enables people with a disability in Wirral to continue living at home safely and independently has reached the last three in a major Health and social Care Award.

The Assistive Technology Project is run in partnership by Wirral Primary Care Trust, Wirral Council’s Department of Adult Social Services, Wirral Partnership Homes and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

More than 500 people attended the North West Health and Social Care Awards Ceremony which took place at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton on the Evening of Thursday, April 24. The Health and Social Care Awards are the flagship awards of the Department of Health and coincide with the 60th anniversary of the NHS. The team will now go through to the national awards evening being held in July at Wembley Stadium, hosted by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement.

The service provides equipment such as bed sensors, fall detectors, flood alerts and other specialist equipment to support people who may be frail or have a disability. Equipment may also be provided to patients after they leave hospital as well as supporting their carers.

In the event of someone having a fall or other accident, a range of sensors and detectors that are connected to a 24 hour monitoring centre are activated within seconds.

Trained operators will then immediately alert the key contact person who is best able to assist. The centre is open 365 days a year - so care is available at all times.

Mrs. Hazel Kelly, 75, from Moreton, appeared on the PCT’s DVD release which is available on our website. Hazel said: “I have been really impressed by this scheme. It has made a big impact on my life - I feel so much more secure in the knowledge that people are available to help at the push of a button.

“Thanks to this initiative I feel safer as I have sensors in my bed. If I’m not in bed by 12 pm or out of bed at 9am - they know there could be something wrong. In addition, I have a red pendant around my neck so that if I have a fall, then I can alert people immediately.

The Chief Executive of Wirral Primary Care Trust, Kathy Doran said: “This has been an extremely rewarding project which has been of real benefit to people who could otherwise have been admitted to residential or nursing care. The scheme has helped to support carers who provide an invaluable role in the community.

Wirral Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Inclusion, Cllr Moira McLaughlin added: “I would like to congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to make this project such a magnificent success. It is just recognition of a tremendous partnership which makes a difference to the lives of many people.

As from the end of March 2008, a total of 504 people had benefited from the installation of ‘Assistive Technology’, to enable them to remain safe and independent within their own home. A total of 1,412 pieces of equipment had been provided and installed.

For more information about the assistive technology service contact the Central Advice Duty team on 0151 606 2006.

Jess Cain, Steph Fry and Hannah Browne all 15years live in the Woodchurch. All attend the local SNAP (Saturday Night Activities Programme) Youth club which they assist the staff with the younger element up to 100 youths.
They have also attended a BLAZE PROJECT course at Birkenhead run by the Fire Service on a weekly basis, learning new skills whilst improving their self-confidence and developing self-esteem.

They also work on the estate with older people, volunteering during the Christmas period to visit residents from a local nursing home and help put up their decorations.

Their next step is to attend a residential Outreach course in Wales. Not put off by the cost of equipment, they are currently fundraising to achieve their latest goal. They have organised Charity car washes with the Fire Service, sponsored walks and ‘bag packs’ at local supermarkets.

The young people are pictured receiving certificates and gift vouchers at Wallasey Police Station. Merseyside Police Youth Co-ordinator, Constable Colin Newby said “It’s always nice to be able to reward young people for positive actions that make Wirral a safer place to live, work and visit.

The first pensioners to benefit from the latest round of Big Lottery Funding to improve health in Wirral took their seats for a lesson in chair based exercise this week – to help protect them from falls, a major cause of hospital admission in the over 60s.

Flo Murphy (seated left) from Bebington and Anne Thomas (right) from Birkenhead were among the first through the doors of The Lauries Centre in Birkenhead. They were there for the inaugural chair based exercise session hosted by Wirral Elders Lunch Club, which is able to offer classes free thanks to a successful bid for £250,000 Big Lottery Funding by Wirral Primary Care Trust’s Health and Wellbeing Team.

The funding is being used to improve the health, wellbeing and lifestyles of thousands of people in Wirral through a range of initiatives including chair based exercise for the older, frailer person, and the special training needed for those taking the classes.

It also means that organisations such as luncheon clubs and residential homes – or individuals who work with older people - can host the exercise classes, using fully qualified trainers to deliver sessions for the first six weeks.

Any Wirral organisation interested in hosting lottery-funded chair based exercise sessions with qualified instructors should contact Community Health Worker Chris McGovern on 0151 630 8489.

“Preventing falls is vital in keeping older people mobile and independent, said Chris who is pictured presenting certificates to the latest group of instructors, Pamela Sands from Noctorum and two Live Wirral Wardens Joseph Lee from Wallasey and Mark King from Oxton - in The Lauries Centre. The three, with others, have achieved their CYQ award in Chair Based Exercise for the Frailer Older Person (Level 2).

Last year more than 4,500 people aged 60 and over were taken to Arrowe Park Hospital A & E Department because of a fall. Improving strength and balance can help prevent falls, which is why part of the latest funding is paying for more instructors and professionals to work with older people to deliver safe and effective chair-based exercise through accredited training.

Added Chris: “Wirral Council recently had several instructors qualified in the new award and will shortly be delivering classes at various locations across Wirral. Following the development of Weight Wise Exercise Classes, this is another excellent example of the Council working in partnership with the Primary Care Trust and other organisations to deliver health opportunities to Wirral residents.

"The Live Wirral Wardens are in a great position to promote healthy lifestyles through chair based exercises and are looking forward to working with more groups in the future.

In addition to helping older people stay fall-free, the £250,000 Big Lottery Funding is also being used to extend existing work in the other key areas of healthy eating and mental health, by:

1.Improving access to and support for people with mild to moderate conditions of anxiety and depression;
2.Supporting individuals and groups to eat more healthily through schemes such as the Food Education Awareness; Staff Training (FEAST).
3.The grant is part of a £7 million five-year wellbeing programme supporting 27 Healthy Living Initiatives across the North West.
